BRADEN, NORMA ROWENA WRIGHT Norma Rowena Wright Braden died peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2011. She was born on August 11, 1925, in Jonesville, Louisiana, the third daughter of a family of six. She attended Louisiana State University where in 1942, she met Earl M. Braden at a serviceman's dance. They were married on June 20, 1948. She worked in the dietary service of St. Vincent's Hospital and the American Red Cross in Birmingham, Alabama, and in 1977, became Child Nutrition Director at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Four of her employees there, Lena, Christine, Olivia and Eula, became her devoted friends. She retired in 1990, after which time the dining hall was named in her honor. She was an active member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where she and her husband were charter members. She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and a member of the church's AIDS Care Team. Indeed, caring for others was her life-long joy. For the past two years, she resided at Regency Retirement Village with her son Michael; the staff and residents never failed to express their love and also feel the grief in her passing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Braden. She is survived by her sister, Myrtis Wright Thornton; her children, Gibby Braden Seals, Michael Braden, and Bruce (Carol) Braden; grandchildren, Amanda Kay Seals (Austin) Bersinger, Jackson Seals, Mack Braden and Brick Braden, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 19, at 11:00AM from Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00PM - 7:00PM. PREWETT, GEORGE C age 95 of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away February 13, 2011. George was the Owner and operator of Alabama Music Center for over 55 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 4 1/2 years. He was a Professional musician and President of the Musician's Union for many years. George is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Blanche, a brother, Bo Prewett, a sister, Maude Shores, four daughters, Anita Hutchinson (Bradley) Sara Benson (Jerry), Donna Roberts, Diane Jordan (Marlin), and 6 Grandchildren. He was a wonderful and loving grandfather. Samantha and Cameron Mathews will miss him very much. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers of Amedisys. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dewayne Teer. DEFREESE, JOHN IRA, 67, died unexpectedly at his home of a massive heart attack on Friday, May, 21, 2010. Johnny grew up in eastern Birmingham and had family and many friends who loved and cherished him. He loved to laugh and joke and loved 50's music and Alabama Football. He clearly loved his family and his best friend, Boomer. He was a kind, loving, sweet and helping man who had a heart as big as all outdoors. He was one of a kind. His death has left a huge hole in the hearts of those who knew him...anyone who knew Johnny loved him. He was born on September 6, 1937 in Haralson County to the late Alfred Monroe Wood and Sallie Azilee Garner Wood. Mr. Wood was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cedartown for over 33 years. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, General Officer, and Coordinator for the preschool class for birth – three year old classes. Mr. Wood was also a R.A. Leader, an usher, and a member of Brotherhood and Brothers in Action. Mr. Wood served as Secretary for the Board of Trustees and was instrumental in the relocation to the Buchanan City Square and restoration of Little Creek’s One-Room School House in Haralson County. He was a 1955 graduate of Steadman High School. He is a veteran of the U. S. Army. He attended Berry College and Georgia State. He was employed with Fulton National Bank for 25 years. He was retired from the Rome Coca-Cola Company after 26 years of service. Until his illness in 2008, he worked part-time in the office of Sullins Enterprise. Mr. Cefard Wood is preceded in death by parents, Rev. and Mrs. Monroe Wood; brothers, Ralph, Hoyt, and Carlton Wood and infant brother; sisters, Zera Mize, Florence Williams, and infant Gertrude Wood; and nephew, Johnny Williams. Mr. Cefard Wood is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Anne Moore Wood, whom he married on June 21, 1969; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. DUNN, MARTHA JO BOWERS, age 64, of Hoover, AL, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, after a 16-year battle with cancer. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Rowe and Nettie Bowers of Damascus, Alabama. She graduated from Elba High School in 1962 and attended Troy State University. She received a Masters degree in Education from the University of Alabama. She taught English, Business Mathematics and Typing at the high school and collegiate levels. She began serving the Lord in music as a child in Damascus Baptist Church and was the organist for First Baptist Church of Hoover for over 20 years through the time of her passing. She also played piano and taught music for Children's Dance Foundation and Cathedral Day Care. Previously, she had blessed her family, church and friends with a host of other talents including teaching, singing, painting, and sewing. She passionately enjoyed hearing, singing and playing Southern Gospel music in church and at home. Martha is survived by husband Larry, son Steven, sister Merita Shutt, niece Wanda Brown, nephews Chris and Tim Watson, cousin Danny Vaughn, and daughter-in-law Yevgeniya Dunn. A native of Birmingham, Alabama he moved to Florida in 1983 and had lived in Avon Park since 1987. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1958 to 1961. He was a commercial and industrial contractor. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He was an avid supporter of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. ROLL TIDE! He was a member of the Parks and Recreation Board. He was a member of Beach Boopers of Orlando, Tampa Bay Beach Boopers, Magic City Boopers and Avon Park Beach Boopers. He was founder and Past President of Highlands County Softball League. SHEPHERD, BETTY SUE GARNER, age 77, of Vestavia Hills, passed away on Thursday, the 2nd of August, 2007. Born in Oneonta, Alabama, Dr. Shepherd was a graduate of Judson College and earned her Master's Degree from the University of Alabama. She studied at Julliard School of Music and was active throughout her life in the field of music. Dr. Shepherd served as Professor of Music at Samford University for 50 years, was the organist at Ruhama Baptist Church for 14 years, and recently retired as organist at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church after 38 years of service. She received the Algernon Sidney Award from Judson College in 1950 and twenty nine years later was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for her outstanding accomplishments throughout her musical career. She performed at many venues across the United States including performances with the Alabama Pops Orchestra, the Birmingham Symphony, and the University of Alabama Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, Dr. Shepherd received the coveted George Macon Award as Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Throughout the years, she had three of her works published and produced CD's of her musical arrangements. Dr. Shepherd touched many lives throughout her years as a Professor of Music and she will be greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C.A. (Neil) Shepherd, Jr. She is survived by her two daughters, Susanne E. Shepherd and Jacqueline Y.S. Johnson (Robert); two sisters, Corine Allred and Peggy Irons; two grandchildren, Audra Yvonne Johnson and Courtney Caitlin Johnson. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Saturday, the 4th of August from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood.
